Supporting Earth Day - 22nd April 2026
20th Apr 2026
Earth Day, celebrated on 22nd April, is a time when individuals, communities, and businesses come together to reflect on their environmental impact and take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future. When you are considering packaging for your products, it is a useful reminder of the role using sustainable packaging can play in helping to reduce our impact on the planet.
In the UK, environmental awareness has grown significantly over the past decade. Consumers are increasingly prioritising eco-friendly products and holding companies accountable for their environmental footprint. This shift has placed packaging under the spotlight, with particular scrutiny on materials that contribute to waste and pollution. Corrugated cardboard, however, stands out as a sustainable solution. Made primarily from renewable resources and widely recyclable, it aligns closely with sustainable principles.
Right sized packaging – the sustainable choice
A good example of this is using right sized packaging which fits your products, rather than using a standard, off the shelf box. Bespoke packaging uses less material, is consequently lighter and often means more products can fit on a pallet, reducing delivery costs and therefore carbon emissions. It provides better protection too – meaning your products are more likely to arrive in pristine condition.

Cardboard is made from recycled material
Corrugated cardboard packaging is one of the most recycled materials in the UK, with UK Government provisional figures for 2024 showing that between 64.1% and 75.2% of UK packaging waste overall was recycled. Its recyclability means it can be reprocessed multiple times, reducing the need for virgin materials and lowering overall carbon emissions. For manufacturers, this creates an opportunity to contribute positively to the circular economy—an approach that emphasises reuse, recycling, and waste reduction.
Sustainable manufacturing
Earth Day also encourages businesses to evaluate their production processes. For corrugated cardboard manufacturers, this includes improving energy efficiency, reducing water usage, and sourcing raw materials responsibly. We recently invested in two new cardboard making machines, both intended to run more efficiently and complete more operations in a single pass, to reduce turnaround time and improve efficiency.
Innovation is a key theme
Innovation is another key theme that resonates strongly with Earth Day. The demand for sustainable packaging solutions is driving advancements in lightweight materials, improved durability, and more efficient designs. By reducing material usage without compromising strength, manufacturers can minimise waste and transportation emissions. Additionally, printing on packaging, can reduce or eliminate the need for labels.
Talking about sustainability
For UK-based manufacturers, Earth Day is also a chance to communicate their sustainability efforts and commitments. Transparency builds trust, and customers increasingly want to know how products are made and what impact they have on the environment. Sharing progress, setting measurable goals, and celebrating achievements can strengthen relationships with both clients and the wider community.
Earth Day - 22nd April
Ultimately, Earth Day serves as a reminder that sustainability is not a one-day initiative but an ongoing responsibility. For the corrugated cardboard manufacturing industry, it reinforces the importance of continuing to innovate, reduce environmental impact, and support a circular economy. By doing so, the industry not only meets the expectations of today’s environmentally conscious consumers but also helps safeguard the planet for future generations.
As the UK continues to move toward a greener economy, corrugated cardboard manufacturers are well-positioned to lead the way in sustainable packaging—making Earth Day a meaningful milestone in an ongoing journey toward environmental stewardship.
