Did you know...all about FEFCO codes?

10th Feb 2026

FEFCO codes are a universal language in the world of corrugated packaging. Used globally by packaging manufacturers, designers, and buyers, these codes provide a standardised way to describe box styles without relying on drawings, long descriptions, or region-specific terminology. Whether you are sourcing packaging, designing new boxes, or communicating with suppliers, understanding FEFCO codes can save time, reduce errors, and improve efficiency across the supply chain.

What Are FEFCO Codes?

FEFCO stands for Fédération Européenne des Fabricants de Carton Ondulé (European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers). The FEFCO code system is a numerical classification that defines standard styles of corrugated packaging. Each code refers to a specific box design, construction method, and structural layout.

A typical FEFCO code is four digits long, such as FEFCO 0201. The first two digits indicate the broad category of packaging, while the last two digits identify the specific design within that category. Importantly, FEFCO codes describe structure only—they do not define dimensions, material grades, or printing.

How FEFCO Codes Work

The system groups packaging designs into categories based on how they are manufactured and assembled. For example, slotted containers are one category, while die-cut designs are another. Once a category is identified, the individual code specifies flap arrangement, closures, and overall construction.

Because the codes are standardised, a FEFCO 0201 box will be the same basic design whether it is produced in the UK, Germany, or Asia. This consistency makes sourcing and communication far more reliable.

Benefits of Using FEFCO Codes

The primary benefit of FEFCO codes is clarity. They reduce misunderstandings between buyers and suppliers, especially when multiple languages or regions are involved. They also speed up the quoting and ordering process, as suppliers can quickly identify tooling, material usage, and manufacturing requirements.

For designers, FEFCO codes provide a proven starting point that balances performance and cost. For procurement teams, they help ensure comparable quotes and consistent packaging across product ranges. Overall, the system supports efficiency, standardisation, and cost control.

Explanation of FEFCO Categories

FEFCO 01 – Commercial Rolls and Sheets
This category includes flat sheets and rolls of corrugated board. These are typically used for custom in-house cutting, wrapping, layering, or as protective dividers rather than finished boxes.

FEFCO 02 – Slotted-Type Boxes
The most common category in corrugated packaging. Slotted containers are made from a single piece of board with flaps that meet or overlap when closed. The classic regular slotted container (FEFCO 0201) falls into this category and is widely used for shipping and storage.

FEFCO 03 – Telescope-Type Boxes
Telescope boxes consist of multiple pieces, usually a separate top and bottom that slide over each other. They provide good stacking strength and protection, making them suitable for heavier or more delicate products.

FEFCO 04 – Folder-Type Boxes and Trays
These boxes are typically made from one blank and require minimal assembly. They often form trays or shallow boxes and are commonly used for retail displays, food packaging, or quick-packing applications.

FEFCO 05 – Slide-Type Boxes
Slide-type designs feature an inner and outer component, similar to a drawer. They are often used for premium packaging, presentation boxes, or products that benefit from repeated opening and closing.

FEFCO 06 – Rigid Boxes
These designs require stitching, taping, or gluing of separate pieces to form a rigid structure. They offer high strength and durability and are used for heavy-duty or industrial applications.

FEFCO 07 – Ready-Glued Boxes
Supplied flat but pre-glued by the manufacturer, these boxes are quick to erect and ideal for high-speed packing operations. They are common in e-commerce and retail fulfillment environments.

FEFCO 08 – Retail-Ready and Shelf-Ready Packaging
This category includes designs intended for direct placement onto retail shelves. They often feature tear-away panels or display openings to simplify in-store handling.

FEFCO 09 – Internal Fitments and Dividers
This final category covers inserts, partitions, and cushioning components used inside boxes to protect products, separate items, or improve presentation.

FEFCO codes remain a cornerstone of modern corrugated packaging. By providing a shared structural language, they streamline communication, improve consistency, and support smarter packaging decisions across the industry. For anyone involved in packaging design, sourcing, or production, understanding FEFCO codes is not just helpful—it’s essential.
